Twitter (X) Video Downloader — Save Videos from Public Posts as MP4

The VidYTMP4 Twitter Video Downloader is a free online tool for saving videos from public X (formerly Twitter) posts to your device as MP4 files. X is where a huge share of the internet's video moments appear first — match-winning goals, breaking-news clips, product launches, comedy sketches, quick tutorials — but the platform gives you no built-in way to keep the actual video file. Its bookmark and like buttons only point back to the post, which needs the app, a login, and a connection every time, and stops working entirely if the post is deleted. This tool fills the gap: paste a public post link, preview the video, and download the MP4 to your phone or computer.

The audience for an X video downloader is broad. Journalists and researchers save clips from public statements and events for their records. Social media managers download their own brand's posted videos to reuse in reports or on other channels. Sports fans keep the goals and highlights that matter to them. Creators save their own clips as part of a portfolio or backup. And plenty of people simply want a funny or useful video available offline — on a train, on a flight, or in a folder where it will not vanish when a timeline moves on.

As with every tool on this site, the scope is honest: this downloader works with public posts on twitter.com and x.com. Posts from protected (private) accounts are visible only to that account's approved followers, so they cannot be fetched here. The post must also actually contain a video — a text-only or photo-only post has nothing to download.

How to Download Videos from X (Twitter) — Step by Step

  1. Open the post that contains the video. In the X app or on x.com / twitter.com in your browser, find the public post with the video you want. Tap or click the post to open it on its own page rather than leaving it in the scrolling timeline — the dedicated post page gives you the clean, correct link.
  2. Copy the post's link. In the app, tap the Share icon under the post (the arrow/upload symbol) and choose Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from your browser's address bar while viewing the post. A correct link contains the username and the word "status", like x.com/username/status/1234567890. The long number is the post's unique ID — every part of the link matters, so copy it whole.
  3. Paste the link into the box at the top of this page. Click or tap inside the box and paste — long-press then Paste on a phone, Ctrl+V on Windows, or Cmd+V on a Mac.
  4. Click the blue "Fetch" button. The tool checks the public post and locates the video attached to it. This takes a few seconds in most cases.
  5. Review the preview card. A card appears with the video's thumbnail and title details. Check it matches the clip you wanted — timelines move fast, and it is easy to copy the neighbouring post's link by mistake.
  6. Click the green Download button. The video starts downloading instantly in your browser as an MP4 file. Let it finish before closing the page, especially for longer clips or slower connections.
  7. Find and play the saved file. On Android, look in the Downloads folder or the browser's download list. On iPhone, Safari saves to the Files app under Downloads, and the Share option lets you save the video into Photos. On a PC, check the Downloads folder. From there it is an ordinary MP4 you can rename, move, or back up like any other video.

A helpful extra detail: links copied from both the newer x.com domain and the older twitter.com domain work exactly the same way here, and links shared out of the app — which sometimes arrive through redirect or share wrappers — are also fine as long as they lead to the public post. What does not work is copying a link to someone's profile, a list, or a search results page: the tool needs the address of the individual post that holds the video.

Tips & Best Practices for Downloading from X

Common Problems & Solutions

The post has no video in it

A downloader can only save what exists. Many X posts contain only text, a photo, or a link card pointing to an article or an external site — those posts have no attached video file at all. Open the post on X and look for an actual video player with a play button and a running time. If the post instead shows a preview card that opens another website, the video (if any) lives on that other site, and you would need that site's link and an appropriate tool for it.

The account is protected, so the fetch fails

Protected accounts — the ones with a small lock icon next to the name — share their posts only with approved followers. This tool has no access to those posts and cannot download their videos, even if you personally follow the account, because the fetch works from the public web rather than through your login. Ask the account owner to send you the video file directly, or to post it from a public account if it is appropriate to share.

X asks for a login before showing the post

Some posts, including certain sensitive or age-flagged content, are hidden behind X's login wall even when the account is public. If the post does not load in a private browser window without signing in, the downloader cannot see it either — from the open web's point of view, the video simply is not publicly reachable. There is no workaround on this page; viewing it requires signing into X itself.

The link I pasted does not work

Check the shape of the link: it should include the username, "/status/", and a long numeric ID. Links to profiles, likes pages, lists, or search results will fail because they do not identify a single post. Links copied from screenshots or retyped by hand often lose characters from the ID. Go back to the post, use Share → Copy link, and paste the result untouched.

The video plays in a new tab instead of saving to my device

Certain desktop browsers open MP4 files for playback rather than saving them automatically. Right-click the playing video and pick "Save video as…" to store it as a file. It is also worth checking your browser's downloads panel first — in many cases the file downloaded correctly and the tab is merely an automatic preview.

Example Use Cases

The local journalist verifying a clip: During a storm, a resident posts a short public video of flooding on a high street. A reporter downloads the clip for the newsroom's records, notes the original post link and time, and contacts the poster for permission before any broadcast use — with the file safely stored even if the post is later deleted.

The social media manager reusing campaign content: A clothing brand's launch video was posted natively to X by a colleague who has since left. The new manager downloads the public post's MP4 and reuses the brand's own asset in a monthly performance deck and on another channel, without chasing old phones and chat threads.

The football fan building a highlights folder: Over a season, a supporter saves the public goal clips posted by his club's official account into a dated folder. On a long flight with no connection, the whole season's best moments are sitting in his gallery ready to rewatch.

The student saving a tutorial thread: A programming tutor posts short public screen-recording lessons on X. A student downloads each lesson video into a course folder, labelled by topic, so revision works offline and the material survives even if the tutor reorganises their account.

Safety, Privacy & Copyright

This tool is intended for public posts and personal, legitimate purposes: saving your own videos, keeping records of public material, and offline viewing of clips you are entitled to watch. It cannot and should not be used to get around protected accounts or X's access controls. Downloading a video also does not give you ownership of it. The creator keeps the copyright, so credit the source when you reference a clip, get permission before reusing someone else's video publicly or commercially, and never present another person's footage as your own. On the privacy side, keep your account safe by following one simple rule: never type your X password into a downloader site. This tool never asks for it — all it needs is the public link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Twitter (X) Video Downloader free?

Yes. Downloading videos from public X and Twitter posts costs nothing, with no account or payment involved. Paste the post link, click Fetch, confirm the preview, and click Download whenever you need a copy of a public clip.

Can I download videos from protected (private) accounts?

No. Protected accounts share posts only with approved followers, and this tool only accesses what is visible on the public web. If you follow the account, you can watch its videos inside X, but downloading here requires the post to be publicly accessible.

Do both x.com and twitter.com links work?

Yes. The downloader accepts post links from either domain — the newer x.com and the classic twitter.com behave identically. Just make sure the link points to an individual post (it will contain "/status/" and a long number) rather than a profile or timeline.

What if the post does not contain a video?

Then there is nothing for the tool to download. Posts made of text, photos, polls, or link cards hold no video file. Find a post where you can see an actual video player with a duration, copy that post's link, and fetch again.

What quality will the downloaded video be?

You receive the MP4 version that X makes available for public viewing of that post. Quality therefore depends on what the uploader originally provided and how X processed it. The tool passes through the public file as served and adds nothing and removes nothing.

Do I need an X account to download a public video?

No. The tool works from the public link alone, and you never log in here. That is deliberate: entering your social media credentials into third-party tools is a common way accounts get stolen, so a downloader that asks for your password is one to avoid entirely.

Need to save videos from other platforms too? VidYTMP4's Facebook Video Downloader handles public Facebook videos, the Instagram Video Downloader covers public reels and posts, and the Pinterest Video Downloader saves video pins — each one free, in your browser, with the same paste-fetch-download steps.
